Key Leader Trips to China and Elsewhere Since 2006 Global Indiana has organized and led 12 trips overseas for school administrators, teachers, school board members, and community leaders. Ten of these trips have been to the People’s Republic of China and one to Germany. The purpose of the trips is to expose educators to international travel at a discount, and to provide contacts at a foreign school for potential development into long-term partnerships. Hosting Chinese Educators and Government Officials Three official groups from China have been hosted in Indianapolis by Global Indiana. Visitors are introduced to school officials in various parts of the state who provide lodging for two to three nights for their guests as they tour the school and community Professional Development In February of 2012 Global Indiana hosted the Midwest Conference on International Education. More than 100 educators attended dozens of sessions on how to internationalize their schools and on the value of world language instruction. Also, prior to every trip, Global Indiana provides training to the travelers on protocol and what to expect when traveling to the destination country for the first time. Planned China Placement for American Teachers With the Chinese Education Connection and Kappa Delta Pi, the international education honorary based in Indianapolis, Global Indiana will place licensed American teachers in China to teach English. There is a great need for native speaking English teachers in China. While many organizations carry out this function, only Global Indiana and the Chinese Education Connection will guarantee adequate lodging, a six or ten month contract, and pre- and in-service training. Associates in China will check on the teachers monthly and will mediate any misunderstandings which may occur between the school and teacher. Hoosier Odyssey This grant supported program will provide leadership training, service learning opportunities, and instruction on international citizen diplomacy. In collaboration with the Indiana 21st Century Scholars program, up to 150 high school students will be identified each year to participate in a three-day camp/training experience prior to a two-week trip to a foreign country to participate in community service activities. |
